ABOUT

ALEX YOUNG is a music producer, multi-instrumentalist, recording artist and researcher. His musical practice focusses on in-betweenness. Genre hopping, falling through the cracks, embracing the old and new. Funk, soul, hip-hop, psychedelia, instrumental, lyrical, long-form, rock and/or roll, his musical output is multi-faceted.

Current projects include singing and producing with boom-bap soul duo IL COMBO, playing guitar as part of JIM MOGINIE’S ELECTRIC GUITAR ORCHESTRA and going leftfield as electro artist A-WYRE.

As part of his Master of Philosophy candidature at the University of Wollongong, Alex’s practice-based research extends on the foundations of his musical output with the creation of THE SLIDE PIANO; an experimental hybrid instrument that explores the creative application of electric slide guitar techniques to the strings of an acoustic piano.

From the early days of Australian hip hop - singing, rapping and playing guitar in the band Good Buddha - Alex has performed and recorded with a wide range of musicians and projects. A collaboration with Brisbane’s Resin Dogs led to the hit single ‘Take Off’ in 2003. He was guitarist/backing vocalist for the Space Invadas (Katalyst, Steve Spacek) live band in 2010, playing major festivals such as Future Music and Splendour in the Grass. Alex was selected as one of six guitarists for Jim Moginie’s Electric Guitar Orchestra (Midnight Oil) to perform the ‘Colour Wheel’ compositions, which explore the synesthetic connection between music and colour. Live performances of the ‘Colour Wheel’ at MONA FOMA and the Opera House Studio among others, culminated in a live album released commercially in early 2016.

IL COMBO’S debut album ‘Deeper’ was released in 2018. Their latest double A-side release ‘Keep On/Make it Better’ is due for release in September 2024.
